Wow, I had no idea about this piece of history. I guess, like it or not, precedent was being established for just how disgusting comics would become down the line. Our local Bookman's has a used comic section, and the covers are so disgusting and pornographic that I can't take my kids anywhere near it. (And these are the covers not in the brown baggies!) As a kid in the 80s, I grew up reading Calvin and Hobbes and would gladly have graduated to comic books...but there was nothing for children. Oh, there was Sonic the Hedgehog and that kind of thing (which pushed the envelope whenever they could), but superhero comics were absolutely not something I wanted to read. It's the same now.

I hear you. Part C talks more about your concerns. The writers and artists weren't all comfortable with where it was going in 1954. Some might be in the same boat today, but are afraid to speak out.
